AT&T Sharp Android slider smartphone leaks

The gang at Unwired View has received a leaked photo of a smartphone said to be coming to the AT&T network running the Android operating system. The phone looks more than a little like the old T-Mobile Sidekick with a slider design. We know some of the facts about the smartphone thanks to the tipster and the device might be interesting to some people that want a new Android device on the AT&T network.

The phone reportedly has a 3.2-inch HVGA touchscreen, GSM/WCDMA connectivity, WiFi, GPS, and a camera on the back. The smartphone has a slide out four row QWERTY keyboard that hides under the screen. The screen doesn’t kick up when opened like some of the slider designs.
The device is said to run on the AT&T 850/1900 UMTS network. The person that leaked the photos assures Unwired View that the device is real and will be coming to North America. That is all of the detail that is available right now on the device. We are missing notable facts like the price and what version of Android the phone runs. What processor is used is also unknown at this time.

Unlock Samsung Galaxy S 2 For Use On AT&T Or T-Mobile

Sometimes there are those phones overseas that are just so appealing, you may want to get them shipped over stateside. Thanks to overseas phone’s being based off the GSM technology (SIM cards) it makes them compatible with GSM carriers like AT&T and T-Mobile here in the US. Normally, you would have to make sure the phone in question is “unlocked” so that it will work with your carrier or go through the hassle of calling the original carrier or taking the device to a shop to be unlocked by a professional. Well, apparently the original Samsung Galaxy S line of phones made this process extremely easy by storing the unlock code inside the phone. This code could then be extracted thanks to a handy app found on XDA allowing you to use these imported phones on either AT&T or T-Mobile.
Well, it looks like Samsung hasn’t changed much and their overseas Galaxy S 2 handsets still provide that special unlock code hidden inside their phones, only to be extracted by a new free SIM unlocking app that can be found on the Android Market. Keep in mind your phone will have to be rooted before you can use the app but the benefits of having an unlocked Galaxy S 2 here in the states before anyone else could make it all worth it. Also, T-Mobile uses slightly different bands than the UK so although you can make calls and text, you may be stuck with only Edge data.
Now that you know how easy it is to unlock the Galaxy S 2, anyone tempted on getting one of these bad boys imported stateside for all your friends to drool over?

Why Does Google List AT&T as a Carrier of the Epic 4G?

Yep, we’re sure this is an error of some sort. That, or AT&T is getting a hell of a lot of Samsung phones and Sprint doesn’t mind them using their name for the QWERTY-enabled Galax S phone.

HTC Holiday to be a 4.5-inch behemoth with qHD resolution, 1.2GHz dual-core, and AT&T future

HTC brought in the 4.3-inch craze, but now that that form factor has gone mainstream, it's looking to even larger dimensions. A 4.5-inch HTC Holiday has been dug up by none other than 911sniper, which is said to pack a qHD resolution (960 x 540), a 1.2GHz dual-core Qualcomm MSM8660, 1GB of RAM, an 8 megapixel camera, and the very latest version of Android Gingerbread (2.3.4). That comes on the heels of Pocketnow unearthing a supposed image of the AT&T-bound smartphone, showing a predictably uncomplicated design framing a vast display. Let's just hope the Holiday codename doesn't mean we'll have to wait till the holidays to see this overpowered new beast in action.

AT&T’s HTC HD7 launch date set for June 5th

This is sort of a round about announcement, because the Windows Phone Blog, said the HTC Twitter account said AT&T said the HTC HD7s would be available for purchase on June the fifth. To all intents and purposes this is just the HD7, with a bit of a twist. It has all the same specifications, except for one, and that is what is generating the most interest in this phone. What might that difference be, well a 4.3 inch WVGA, Super LCD display. That’s a huge bump, compared to the plain old LCD in most HD7 units. Locally I know there are a lot of people waiting for the HD7s to get into the wild so they can start importing them. It’s still not live on AT&T’s site yet, still coming soon. So it seems to be a bit of an impasse at the moment, We’ll have to wait for it to go live on AT&T for real confirmation.

AT&T Upload speeds and caps, who is to blame?

AT&T has been in an ongoing battle with users and blogs over the upload speeds on recent android phones. Who do we blame for it AT&T, Speedtest.net, or Both? You might remember all the talk the Atrix 4G got when it launched as a 4G phone, then users all learned 4G upload speeds were currently disabled. AT&T even responded to the complaints. We have done a little digging and have some interesting results regarding AT&T, and Speedtest.net for you all to enjoy below.

Above you can see an image of the Infuse 4G from AT&T both running some speedtests only a few minutes apart. On the left you have XtremeLabs Speedtest and Speedtest.net on the right. Are you seeing that right, or are we crazy. Speedtest.net must really hate AT&T because we have ran these tests time and time again and things are always faster with XtremeLabs. Oh and the Infuse 4G recently got a OTA update to fix the upload speeds, the fix gave about a 15kb increase and that is basically not even worth the news.
So what is going on, that update didn’t seem to help anything, and neither does speedtest.net and the inaccurate results or whatever you want to call them. We have tested this on more than one AT&T device, and they all seem to perform pretty poorly not only on upload speeds in general, but in speedtest.net as well. Next I have some screenshots of the Samsung Galaxy S II unlocked and running on AT&T, I mentioned we tested on more than one device. It also gets just outright terrible results on speedtest.net

Above you see the results of the Galaxy S II speedtest.net results running on AT&T also, and clearly those results are sloooow. The Galaxy S II is much, much faster than that on any network, but again it gets extremely slow upload speeds. I thought AT&T had addressed the upload speeds issue, but apparently not. It looks like they are still trying to steer around the fact that they are not allowing people much, and are severely still capping upload speeds. The Infuse, and Atrix updated barely made a difference for users.
Why do I say that AT&T is still severely capping upload speeds, because we have some proof. I mentioned we had an unlocked Galaxy S II running on AT&T right. Well it is not tied down with AT&T’s software and OTA updates that seem to be limiting those on AT&T. It gets blazing fast download, and upload speeds as long as we don’t use speedtest.net. Our next screenshot is the Galaxy S II unlocked on AT&T using XtremeLabs for our download/upload testing, and what do we get– 4100 kb/s download and 2500 kb/s upload.

You can clearly see the difference, not only are scores extremely low on speedtest.net, but even when compared to the Infuse 4G with XtremeLabs the Galaxy S II is just blazing, and i mean blaaazing fast. Obviously speedtest.net is either highly inaccurate, or they hate AT&T because I don’t get hugely different numbers like that on my T-Mobile devices. So who is to blame? This must mean that it is AT&T. Two phones both from Samsung running on AT&T 4G. The Infuse 4G gets dead slow speeds most likely because AT&T is still capping data way more than we would expect them to, especially upload speeds. Do you see those upload results from the Galasy S II? It got around 2500 kb/s consistently. That sure beats 246 kb/s and maybe 350 kb/s (if your lucky) that the Infuse and Atrix seem to be getting.
I don’t want to rip on AT&T to much, or speedtest.net for that matter, but what is up with the huge differences. Clearly the Galaxy S II being unlocked is not being capped by AT&T and because of it being free of their caps it is able to pull in some fairly solid numbers. Basically what we are getting at is blame AT&T. They are still capping data in huge numbers. Obviously all carriers have caps to even the network load and things of that sort, but this just looks ridiculous to me. AT&T needs to address this fully, and soon.

Vizio Android-powered smartphone crosses FCC on path to AT&T

Back in January during CES the company that most of us know for cheap HDTV sets called Vizio was showing off some new wares that it was working on for the market. These new gadgets included and Android-powered smartphone and a tablet as well. Considering how Vizio tore up the HDTV market in short order, anything that this firm comes up with gets my attention as a product to watch. I wrote a bit about the tablet and the smartphone back in January during CES.

That Android smartphone hasn’t been heard from since January, until today. The smartphone has now crossed the FCC and appears to be headed to AT&T. The phone will apparently simply be called the Vizio Phone. The specs of the little phone aren’t that bad either. It will sport a 4-inch screen with a resolution of 854 x 480.
The processor is a single core 1GHz offering, and it will have 4GB of internal storage. The phone will also have HDMI output and operates on GSM 850 and 1900 MHz networks. There are still some unknowns about the phone at this point, namely what version of Android it packs. Froyo would be a safe bet, but you never know. We also don’t know the launch date or price. I would expect the Vizio Phone to land soon and the price should be very good considering Vizio is a low price company.

AT&T to Offer 1.2 GHz Dual-Core HTC Lead

The phrase "when it rains, it pours" comes to mind today as we try to keep up with a host of HTC and AT&T rumors coming out of the 911Sniper blog. We have already covered the HTC Puccini tablet and the HTC Holiday handset this morning, so why not add another? Without further ado, it's time to put the HTC Lead on your radar.

The specs read like your typical high-end Android wish list with Gingerbread (2.3.4), a 4.3-inch WVGA display, a 1.2GHz dual-core Qualcomm MSM8660 processor, and 768MB RAM. Ironically, these pale slightly when compared to the Holiday as the Lead has a smaller screen, less memory, and downgrades in the camera department. Whereas the Holiday has an 8MP snapper on the back and a front-facing 1.3MP camera, the Lead only offers a 5MP camera on the rear. Other details include support for Wi-Fi (802.11 b/g/n) and Bluetooth 3.0.

US Galaxy S II variants named: AT&T Attain, Verizon Function and Sprint Within

Samsung’s Galaxy S II is one of the mot coveted Android smartphones of the moment, but while Europe and Asia is able to play with the Super AMOLED Plus handset, North America is still waiting for its taste of overclocked Exynios. Now it seems US naming and carrier support has been leaked courtesy of a premature accessory listing.

According to the Wireless Xcessories Group, their silicone gel back cover will fit the Samsung Galaxy S 2 Attain on AT&T, the Galaxy S 2 Function on Verizon, and the Galaxy S 2 Within on Sprint. T-Mobile USA is notable for its absence; that could be because the carrier isn’t getting a version or, perhaps more likely, because aesthetically it is different and the gel wouldn’t fit.
Given the success of the original Galaxy S in North America, it’s no great surprise that Samsung is working with so many carriers on its successor. Of course, we still don’t know quite when it will arrive.

Samsung Infuse 4G Now On Sale For $199.99 At AT&T, $149.99 On Amazon Wireless

As promised, from today the AT&T online store is offering the Samsung Infuse 4G for $199.99 with a 2-year contract. The contract requires you to additionally purchase a minimum data service which starts at $15/month. Alternatively, you can pick up the 4G device for $549.99 sans-contract. Oh and there is also free shipping.

Dubbed the "nation’s thinnest 4G smartphone", this 8.99mm Android 2.2 device features a gigantic 4.5" Super AMOLED Plus display (it really does look enormous on such a thin profile), a 1.2GHz Hummingbird processor, an 8MP rear camera with 720p video capture, a 1.3MP front camera, and Samsung’s proprietary Touchwiz UI.
There are a number of accessories available for the phone, including a car charger, vehicle mount, desktop dock, and a selection of colourful covers.
The device also features a special edition of Angry Birds with a new "Golden Egg" level, offering exclusive prizes to owners of the Infuse 4G.
Head over to the AT&T online store to pick up the phone, or if you are the rumour-trusting, adventurous sort then wait and see if Wal-Mart’s $178.88 price tag is the real deal.

Earlier this week, we did a basic unboxing of the Samsung Infuse 4G. Since then, I’ve had the pleasure of using this phone for a couple of days, and I must say… it’s nice. The 4.5″ Super AMOLED Plus screen delivers an awesome viewing experience, along with a ridiculous viewing angle. The speed is pretty snappy, and the response time on commands is quick. All in all, a pretty good buy from the guys at AT&T for $199, which is the sale price when the infuse goes on sale 5/15/11.

AT&T’s crazy deal of the weekend is the refurbished Samsung Galaxy Tab for $199.99, and free shipping. So if you are looking for a cheap Android tablet that is easy to root and sweeten up with some Gingerbread, this might be the deal for you. You have to get a data plan, too, but you can cancel it later if you want to. These are selling for $349.99 new, so 200 bucks is a pretty nice deal.

You can find rooting instructions here at the XDA forums, if you should need them. It comes with a 90-day warranty as well.

Why 4G is Ape Spit to You and Me

Lets begin by noting that marketing, especially when it comes to technology, is all about making the consumer believe two things. The first thing a technology consumer should believe is that they need the technological breakthrough you happen to be selling. The second thing a technology consumer should believe is that your device or service is only good until you’ve got a newer product or service for sale. But what if you’ve got a product that isn’t quite as good as your competitor? In the epic case of USA’s infatuation with mobile network speeds, carriers have chosen the wrong path: aping one another.

In the current state of things in the mobile industry, at least here in the USA, is one where the actual performance of your network has nothing to do with the label you’re legally allowed to give it. All of the major mobile carriers in this country are saying they’ve got a 4G network while each of them is very, very different from the next. Instead of offering a superior product, businesses here are leaning heavily on advertising and marketing, (read: evil,) to sell consumers on the idea that they’ve got the most bang for the buck they’re about to spend on mobile data.
I’m not going to cry and beg here, I’m not going to tell you that I demand anything from these mobile carriers, no way. Instead what I’m going to do is offer some sage advice. If you’d like to win the pocketbooks of your consumers for longer than the amount of time you’ve got the hottest device on the market, you’re going to have to stop announcing that your network has 4G speeds.
And you can’t just stop there. You’ve got to sell the public on the idea that a single term for a product such as network speed is bunk. Why? Because it is! And not only is the term 4G an absurd goal for every single big network to be reaching for, it’s a pile of spit. Wireless networks have put so many different speeds under this same umbrella term that it’s lost all meaning, and has become a situation that people will look back on and say, “shoot, that was silly, I should have just gone with network X all along, at least they weren’t lying to us”
Network X, here’s what you do to differentiate yourself and not only gain the majority share of the mobile business, but the majority mind share of the consumer public as well. Completely forget everyone else and come up with your own terms. Obviously keep an eye on everyone else behind the scenes, but stop acting like a bunch of politicians and act like the omnipotent businesses you are. Why do you think Android is so powerful? Why do you think Apple is so powerful? They speak in terms their audience understands and they allow the consumer to choose based on who they love the best, a situation I don’t think any of the major networks are doing enough to nurture at this very moment.
Be a home to your consumers, don’t be a race car driver in an Indy 500 against the rest of the networks. Furthermore, Ozzy and Bieber are making fun of you, and have been since the Superbowl.

The Nation’s Thinnest 4G Phone Becomes Official!

Just moments ago, AT&T and Samsung proudly unveiled their newest smartphone, the Infuse 4G. And guess what, it has been made official! The Samsung Infuse 4G is regarded as “remarkably light, weighing less than Nexus S, even with 0.5-inch larger screen and larger battery.” By all accounts, this is most definitely the precursor to the Samsung Galaxy S II.

It might not be the largest touch screen smartphone from Samsung, but sure enough, you will be fascinated with its 4.5-inch super AMOLED Plus screen and its 8.99mm thickness. It has an 8 megapixel camera on the back and a 1.3 megapixel camera on the front. Plus, it will be powered by a 1.2 GHz single core processor and it will be the first ever smartphone to feature HSPA+ at 14.4Mbps. Also, important to know that it will run the soft served Android 2.2 Froyo.

The nation’s thinnest 4G device is the most definite pre-cursor to what is looking to be the most powerful phone in 2011 – the Samsung Galaxy S II. It will be out in stores this forthcoming May 15 and it will have a price tag of $199 on contract with no rebate clutter for you to undergo.
Also, Rovio, AT&T and Samsung announced that they will be having a contest which caught everyone’s attention. AT&T Officially Announces the Infuse: $199, May 15th, With Exclusive Angry Birds – And, Will Allow Sideloading!!

AT&T officially announced that the Samsung Infuse 4G will be on sale in just ten days, and will drop at a modest $199. Being proclaimed the “thinnest 4G smartphone with the largest AT&T display,” this 1.2 GHz beauty ships with Froyo and has Angry Birds pre-installed, with an exclusive level that can only be found on this device.

But wait, there’s more!! Reports are starting to trickle in that AT&T has NOT blocked sideloading on this device! Virtually every Android phone that AT&T has shipped thus far has had the “Unknown sources” box greyed out, preventing the ability to install any apps that haven’t come straight from the market. When Amazon launched their Appstore, they hinted that they were working on a solution with AT&T, as the Appstore can’t be installed with the “Unknown sources” box checked. Samsung AT&T Event to Reveal Infuse 4G Imminently

We’re right at the door of the Samsung / AT&T event here in New York City and it’s basically definite that the big ticket item today will be the Samsung Infuse 4G. Exciting enough for you? As our good pal Philip Berne notes, this is a phone that’s “remarkably light.. weighs less than Nexus S, even with 0.5″ larger screen and larger battery.” Plus it’s got that utterly fantastic Super AMOLED Plus display we’ve been marveling over on the DROID Charge – play your cards right AT&T and you might have the first phone on the market with that display!

A few more specs while we’re waiting for the event to unfold: This is a 4.5-inch screen toting Android 2.2 Froyo having ARM Cortex A8 1.2GHz processor run machine with an 8 megapixel camera on the back and a 1.3 megapixel camera on the front. By all sights and sounds of the thing, this is most definitely the pre-cursor to the Samsung Galaxy S II.

AT&T Prepaid Fight vs. Verizon Wireless Unleashed Plan

When it comes to prepaid plans two big names such as AT&T Wireless and Verizon Wireless always rival each other, this is good and healthy competition that always keeps the pricing down. So who will win the fight for glory?
RCR Wireless have hit on this subject and it is somewhat very interesting indeed, Verizon Wireless have a plan called “Unleashed” and this offers customers unlimited mobile Web services, unlimited messaging and unlimited calling over its network for $50 per month, the only downside to this is that they only have three phones that use this plan. There are a few limitations such as lack of phones and its mobile Web experience is limited to the Web browser that is included on the three handsets and this does not give you the full web browsing experience.
The Unleashed plan according to the source above undercuts available prepaid plans, the ones that offer SMS messages at 2 cents per text, unlimited calling for $2 per day or unlimited bundles costing $10 or $20 per month.
Over Tracfone Wireless Inc.’s Straight Talk the Unleashed plan is $5 per month that included unlimited calling, messaging and data using the Verizon Wireless network and feature phones.
Now looking at AT&T Mobility’s GoPhone unlimited plans with prices at $60 per month for unlimited text messages and voice calls and its $75 per month for extra 200 megabytes of data transmission what would you choose? If you choose the AT&T Mobility GoPhone you can pay $2 per day for unlimited calls and text messages and data packages ranging up to $25 per month for 500 MB.
Who wins the pre-paid market then?

AT&T/Samsung “Special Annoucement” May 5

We just got an invite to the AT&T/Samsung event being held on May 5th from 4-6pm. They will be making a “special announcement”, and will be featuring product demos and executive remarks. Hmmm. Could it be the Samsung Infuse which was announced at CTIA 2011? Not sure what the news will be, but we will be reporting on it live right here.

Back when the Infuse was first announced, we didn’t know much about the Super AMOLED screen. But now that we’ve seen it on the Galaxy S II, we know how stunning it is. So seeing it on another device is pretty exciting. Keep an eye out right here on Android Community on Thursday, we’ll be reporting live with pictures and video on all the action at this event. If you have any speculation you’d like to share, please do so in the comments.

AT&T & T-Mobile, Want To Add Your 2 Cents Worth? FCC Says Ok

As you’re already aware, not everyone is happy with the AT&T&T-Mobile buy-out. It appears that the FCC wants to know what you think about the whole acquisition, which is looking to be finalized about this time next year. Have you had an opinion or thought on the matter? The FCC has provided a place on their electronic comment filing page for you to chime in. Now is the time to take advantage if you’ve been looking to get something off of your chest. Head on over to their site via the source link and look for file number 147, proceeding number 11-65 and feel free to fire away in the comment box. While you’re at it, paste that rant or blessing in our comments section first before pasting it over at their site. We’d love to hear your thoughts on the matter. Dan Hesse, there’s even a spot for you too my friend! As a T-Mobile employee myself, I have much to say on the matter, but I think I’ll save that jazz for another post. I’ll just suffice it to say this, I shiver at the thought of Android being solely left in the hands of AT&T.
I think our friend Zak Stinson, over at Android Police sums it up well as to what we should be worried about:

A lack of competition resulting from fewer, larger carriers may result in less innovation and increased prices.
Both carriers’ 4G HSPA+ bands are incompatible, risking loss of coverage for T-Mobile handsets once AT&T LTE starts rolling out
Only one major carrier will be buying GSM handsets, meaning they will have the lion’s share of control over the GSM devices that make it to the U.S. market
