PAC-MAN for Android Review [Amazon Free App of the Day]

It appears that BANDAI / NAMCO are making an effort to get into the mobile gaming world today as they’ve both released PAC-MAN for Android exclusively through the Amazon Appstore for free AND have showed up at the Qualcomm (Uplinq) conference alongside other brand giants collaborating with the chipmakers. What we’re looking at here is the PAC-MAN game on a couple of devices of note: the HTC ThunderBolt (because it’s still one of the most widely used devices on the LTE-having market right now,) and the Sony Ericsson Xperia PLAY because we wanted to see if the controls did anything with the game. Turns out they do – sort of.

Once you open this app you’ll notice the BANDAI / NAMCO logo in orange and yellow on white, then the game. Instantaneously and without a wait you’ll be playing PAC-MAN in classic arcade fashion. This app is set up for use on all screen sizes, but once you’ve got it up on a larger tablet, you’ll find that a large black border appears around your game screen. We’re hoping for a tablet-optimized version of the game in the near future.

The reason we ARE looking for an optimized version of the app is because it’s utterly amazing and totally classically worth playing. There’s a single control, that being the virtual joystick that you’re able to control from anywhere on the screen, then a pause screen that you can activate with your back button (or the Circle button if you’re on the Xperia PLAY.) Have a look then go get it for free from the Amazon Appstore!
Check out our Amazon Appstore 101 column for more information on the store if you’re totally unawares!

Plants VS Zombies Review [Amazon App Store Free App of the Day]

Well would you look at that? Plants vs Zombies is out! It’s been on Apple’s iOS for what seems like forever and it’s finally lumbered its undead self on over to our favorite mobile platform, Android! And, following the example of Rovio’s Angry Birds RIO before it, Popcap has decided to release Plants VS Zombies on the Amazon Appstore first, it being free for the entire day today, today being May 31st, 2011. We’ve got a mini review of the game right here, too!

It’s a game that’s all about strategy. Certainly it’s not about shooting your enemy in the face, and you’ll never see a decapitated bear anywhere, but those undead humanoids, well, you’ve just got to take care of them. And what better way to destroy zombies than with plants? There IS no better way! Therefor you’ve got a grid which represents your yard, sheets of sod (aka brand new grass laid out like a red carpet), zombies coming at you very, very slowly, and plants that you can plant to defend yourself.

This game ends up being much more like a puzzle than it is like a shooter game or a level transgressor game. Instead you’re doing castle defense, where your castle is your neighborhood home and your archers and swordsmen are your sunflowers and your pea pod shooters. As you plant, you must catch suns as they fall from the sky. As the suns fall from the sky and you catch them, you gain energy enough to plant new flowers. As you be a levels, you gain seeds to plant new kinds of plants, flowers, vegetables, and more.

It’s completely killer fun, and like the greatest games for mobile, this one’s definitely hit on the touchscreen craze like a sawblade hits a treebranch, cutting with perfect teeth at the lifeblood that allows them to be successful. Play it!

Also go get it for free! Don’t know how to work the Amazon Appstore? Check out our very own Android Community 101: Amazon Appstore for everything you need to know. Exciting!

Amazon AppStore updates to v1.14 with fixes and New two step purchase method

Early this morning I got an update for the Amazon AppStore on my device and it seems they’ve added a few updates worth noting. Mainly some bug fixes and things of that sort, but they have also implemented a new two-step purchase method where you must click twice. This should avoid accidental purchases for those unlucky enough to have done it by mistake. We didn’t hear anything regarding this til now, but it was a nice surprise.

This update also bring an improved compatibility check for the App of the Day amazon features, as well as some much needed improvements to the support for older devices running on Android 1.6 because apparently some still do. They also mention overall stability improvements.
It is nice to see Amazon keeping up to date with their popular new App Store, I have a feeling they will continue to improve it right up until they launch a few android devices of their own. So update your Amazon AppStore and feel free to get the latest free app of the day. Today it is Yoo Ninja.

Amazon Appstore Receives Minor Update

Amazon has started pushing out an update for their Appstore tonight, bringing it to version 1.14. Along with a few compatibility fixes and stability improvements, Amazon has also included a new system to help avoid those accidental purchases.
Now when you go to purchase an application, users will have to verify their choice instead of it going straight to downloading the application. This is a great feature to include, especially for those of us that have a tendency to go app crazy ( yes me included in that statement) and those of us that have smart kids that like to get a hold of our devices and download whatever there little hearts desire ( I have ran into this issue a time or two also).
If you do not get the push notification of the update you can easily manually update the application by going into the menu and then settings. In settings you will be given the option to check for updates manually.
So go ahead and update your Amazon Appstore application and enjoy!!!

[Updated: It's Gone] Samsung Galaxy Player 4.0 Now Available On Amazon For $229

UPDATE: …and it’s gone. Did anyone successfully place an order before Amazon pulled the listing?
If you’re the type that would rather have a dedicated MP3 player instead of using your phone for such a task, but still want to show your love and support for Android, then you’ll be glad to know that the Samsung Galaxy Player 4 is now officially on sale at Amazon for $229.

This 4 inch iPod Touch competitor features a 1GHz processor, 8GB of internal storage with SD card slot (expandable up to 32GB), 3.2 MP rear camera, VGA front camera, Wi-Fi b/g/n, GPS, Bluetooth, and Android 2.2 with Market access. In short, it’s a Galaxy S phone… without the phone (although if can be used to video chat on Skype and Qik using the front facing camera). It also supports a wide variety of media types, including MP3, WMA, Ogg, FLAC, AAC, AVI, MP4, 3GP, WMV, AST, MKV, and FLV, so you should be able to listen to/watch just about anything on this device.
If you plan on picking one of these up, prepare for a bit of a wait. Even though it’s available for purchase immediately, Amazon is claiming a 3-6 week shipping delay.

Amazon Nearly Prepared for Samsung Galaxy Player 4.0

Remember back a million years ago, aka January of this year, when we did an odd review of some Samsung commercials advertising a device that looked awfully similar to an iPod Touch? Turns out that product is FINALLY nearly ready to be sold in the USA, and by the looks of things, it’ll be coming to Amazon first. Also there’s certainly been more news on these little devices since those commercials, but not a whole heck of a lot on a release date – and that’s what matters most!

Amazon had the 4.0 version of this device up earlier today for a total cost of $229. Sound worth it to you? Let’s re-discuss some specs: it’s got a 1Ghz processor, 8GB of internal storage with a microSD card slot that’ll allow you to ad 32GB more, a 3.2 megapixel rear-facing camera, a VGA front-facing camera, Wifi b/g/n on the inside aside GPS, bluetooth, and Android 2.2 with Android Market access. Those of you that saw the device in the online store, thanks for the tips – did you purchase one? Are you now being offered refunds or something similar?

Once you get this device, you’ll be blasting forth with what’s essentially a Galaxy S phone without the phone part. No calling unless you can figure out how to turn the Wifi connection into a walky-talky or something similar. From there you’ll be able to play basically every media form an average person uses: MP3, WMA, Ogg, FLAC, AAC, AVI, MP4, 3GP, WMV, AST, MKV, and FLV, and of course the front-facing camera will facilitate video chat via Skype and Qik. Can you even wait? Once we’ve got a link back to the market for a working listing, (the original is now broken,) we’ll hook you up!

Amazon Free App of the Day Reminder [App Mini Review]

Brilliant, is what I am calling this simplistic little application. Developer cody_04l is one of the thousands of users of the Amazon Appstore across the nation and also a fellow who tries his best to remember that the appstore has a free app deal every single day. Sadly, noone can remember everything, thusly Cody created an app to help: the Amazon Free App of the Day Notifier. We gave it a shot and tested it out and guess what? It works like a charm.

This application is also just known as Appstore Reminder, and it’s nothing more than a checking app that sees Amazon’s store, judging each day whether or not they’ve got a new free app up for download. You can set the time of day you’d like for the Appstore Reminder to remind you of a new app and your reminder will be pushed to you much in the same way an email notification would. Totally worth it methinks. You can also test out the app to make sure your reminder will work before actually setting it to its daily job.

Once you’ve got a new notification, all you’ve got to do is tap the notification in your notifications window and it’ll disappear while you are transported to the Amazon Appstore (you’ll have to have it downloaded, of course,) where you’ll be allowed to check out and grab the newest free app available. Very helpful indeed!

Cody (who affiliates himself with RaueSoft Development) would like your feedback on the app so feel free to post it here or back in the thread he dropped at XDA.
Download version 1.0 [here] and remember that it’s not a final perfect build.

Samsung Galaxy Tab 8.9 priced at €606 by Amazon.de, joined by 10.1 model in a pre-order dance

The US already knows when Samsung will launch its updated Galaxy Tab models and for how much, but that picture hasn't been quite as lucid over in Europe. Amazon.de is doing its best to dissipate the mists of unknowing by listing the 16GB Galaxy Tab 8.9 at a price of €606.50 ($852), whether you're buying the version with a black or white back. That sounds a relatively steep price, but it's not clear whether we're talking about the WiFi-only or 3G-equipped model. Notably, the Galaxy Tab 10.1 option is also listed alongside its 8.9-inch brethren, but there's no price attached to it yet. All we can really say for now is that the wheels are in motion and these Honeycomb tablets look to be on their way to the Euro market at about the same time as they'll hit the American one. Égalité!

Amazon Tablets Priced for Winter Holiday Season 2011

Now we’ve got prices, too! The smaller of the two tablets will supposedly cost $349 while the 10-inch tablet will come in at $449 – this information coming from PC Mag. If this report is true, they’ll essentially be underpricing every tablet from the Motorola XOOM to the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 and 8.9 all the way back to the ACER Iconia Tab A500. Of course the Eee Pad Transformer still would be winning out by $50, but that’d be having less than half the power that this new Kal-El processor toting Amazon tablet would have.

According to the same sources that’ve provided the prices, Amazon’s tablets will be out in time for the winter holidays of 2011. These tablets, they say, will be opting for regular LCD displays instead of the dual-mode e-paper/color panels like Qualcomm’s mirasol they’d originally been said to be shooting for. This adds to the tiny collection of oddities when it comes to this device, another point being that Samsung has been tipped as Amazon’s OEM partner. Seems a bit strange given their own imminent release of the Galaxy Tab 10.1 and 8.9, but considering the fact that Samsung does provide chips for Apple, a vast and all-encompassing hug of the tablet industry probably isn’t out of Samsung‘s jurisdiction.

Quick Look at Today’s Free Amazon App: Retro Camera

Do you consider yourself a photobug? Then you might want to take a quick look at Amazon’s free app of the day: Retro Camera Plus. The app uses your camera to take stylized pictures, giving you 7 different “cameras” each with a completely different look to the end-result photo. After you take your pictures, you have a button to go to your gallery, which offers a pretty cool interface for scrolling through your captured moments. It also gives you quick share options via Facebook and Twitter. Beyond the app’s gallery, pictures are also saved to the SD card (or internal memory if you have a Nexus S…wink, wink), where they can be viewed using your phones native photo gallery. All in all, the app is nifty and can be fun, but won’t really take the place the of your native camera app due to virtually no advanced options and the fact that the view finder is positively tiny. Still, if you’re looking for a way to jazz up some quick shots, you can’t really complain about the price…at least if you download it today from the Amazon Appstore. Tomorrow, the app will be back to its regularly scheduled price of $2.99. Screen shots after the break.

Amazon beats Verizon, drops Droid Charge to $199

If you haven’t already ordered the amazing and blazing fast Droid Charge you might want to keep reading. Amazon has done what they’ve done many times in the past and are offering a lower price than Verizon Wireless for the brand spanking new Samsung Droid Charge. When pricing first leaked the Droid Charge was listed as $299 with a new 2 year contract when the pricing has usually been $199 for smartphones. Verizon stuck with that price for some reason, but Amazon is here to save the day.

Amazon is now offering the Samsung Droid Charge lower than Verizon, they are asking the “expected” $199 with a new 2 year contract like we all thought it would be. So for those that have not ordered through Verizon, you might as well head on over to Amazon and save $100 real fast. Use those saving and get a few cases, and a screen protector for that beautiful 4.3″ display.
Amazon has been known to do this in the past, so it comes as no surprise. At one point Amazon had the Droid Incredible 2 as low as $79, the Motorola Atrix for only $50, and now they are even offering a Trade-In program for old DVD’s and electronics. So send in your old original Droid, or even that iPhone with Amazon Trade-In and get the Droid Charge today for only $199.

Amazon Wireless: Get Your DROID X2 for $149.99

You can go to Verizon Wireless online right now and get the fresh new DROID X2 for $199 as was mentioned earlier this morning. That’s a great deal and all, but guess what….You can also go to Amazon Wireless and grab the DROID X2 for $149.99. Now to me that seems like an even better deal. One thing I did noticed when looking into this deal is that unfortunately it looks like the phone is on backorder. So if you’re wanting to get this deal from Amazon Wireless, you’ll possibly have to wait a couple weeks for it to ship. If you guys are like me, you’ll want instant gratification. This may mean paying the extra $50 to get the DROID X2 from Verizon, assuming they have plenty in stock. You probably should look into that prior to choosing from where you’ll order.

Ok so, to to recap on this deal, Amazon Wireless is setting up VZW customers with this new DROID X2 for $149.99 which is a huge discount from the stricken through list price shown at $559.99. If it’s time for an upgrade, or you’re a customer of another carrier looking for a change in service, consider this option. Whatever your decision, you’re getting one of the latest Android devices from Motorola and Verizon.

Amazon Trade-In Beta now Live, Trade that iPhone for some Andy

It looks like Amazon is joining the likes of Best Buy, T-Mobile and others and are now offering a full trade-in program. The Trade-In Beta was explained in a little more detail today and you can see the full press release below. It looks like Amazon will be accepting things like Electronics, Books, DVD’s, Games and more all for the trade-in program. I like this idea as I have plenty of old games I don’t need, not to mention that iPod Touch that I never use now I have a 32GB MicroSD in my Android phone, and Google Music Beta to top that if needed.

So if anyone of you readers are like me and have friends or co-workers that really love your new 4.3″ Thunderbolt Android phone, or the blazing fast speeds and HDMI out on your G2x and wish they could get out of their old iPhone and into some Android it is your duty to tell them all about Amazon Trade-In. The shipping is free, they will deposit a gift card in your account in return and then all you do is buy a new or used phone from Amazon. Its now that easy to switch to Android. Tell your friends and family.
I decided to check it out myself and a few Blu-Ray DVD’s only got me about $3 dollars each, but my mint condition Nexus One was worth about $130 using Amazon Trade-In, I’d say that is a decent price for a device almost a year and a half old. The iPhone 3G is worth around $113, so for those that made that mistake feel free to trade it in immediately and get a HTC EVO instead, you’ll be glad you did. I didn’t get into trading in old books, or video games much as I was mainly curious about the electronics and mobile part of this. To try this yourself click here.

Amazon Appstore Free App of the Day: The Impossible Game [Mini Review]

Ahh the Amazon Appstore Free App of the Day! If nothing else you’ll always be there for me to look forward to each day. Of course today’s free app has given me more than my fair share of pain… The Impossible Game is an app which is remarkably true to its name, and very addictive in a sort of masochistic way.

The game is simple, as most games which claim to be this hard are. You control a square. Touch the screen, the square jumps. Your little boxy friend scrolls along the level with you trying to make sure he doesn’t run into, or land on any spikes, or the black sections of the “ground.” Somewhere around “attempt 13,” (the game is kind enough to keep count) it started to sink in I was still on level 1.

The key here is that the game managed to destroy me over and over without making me get so angry I’d uninstall it. This is no small feat. The game keeps you engaged and on your toes enough to stay fun so long as you don’t take your failure too personally. Now, I wasn’t able to confirm there is more than one level (not for lack of trying), but assuming there is this game will be a great way to burn some time, especially for those of you who want a break from Angry Birds.

Angry Birds RIO Update on Android Market by Friday

The cards are tossed, Rovio’s released their newest update for their RIO expansion of the Angry Birds franchise, and customers only willing to use the Android Marketplace are digging their fingernails into their kneecaps waiting for it to be out for them. Turns out they’ll only be waiting a couple more days is Rovio ain’t lyin – at the end of Friday at the latest. Meanwhile everyone else in the world on both Android and iOS are enjoying the fruits of their beaches.

Have a look over at our Angry Birds RIO Beach Volley full spoiler if you’d like to spoil it for yourself early. If you’d like to download the game right this moment, head to your local Amazon Appstore, where they’ve had the game for several days.
Then I’ve got a question for all of you: are you one of those people refusing to use the Amazon Appstore to get Angry Birds updates? Are you protesting, or are you just lazy? Or are you in-between: not caring too much about when you get the updates to Angry Birds, just that you do?

Amazon Coyote and Hollywood Tablets on the Docket

Word is that Amazon is prepping not one, but two new tablets to be released inside 2011. The first is a dual-core tablet by the name of “Coyote” and the second is a quad-core tablet by the name of “Hollywood.” This information comes via tipster to Boy Genius Report, and besides the basics, (names and processor possibilities,) not a whole lot more is known. They’re probably going to be wild and crazy though, as without the need for the Android Market, Amazon will be able to do whatever they like to the Android system placed on their devices – that means no requirements for any pre-loaded apps, for example.

For the processors there’s going to be, if the sources is right, an NVIDIA Tegra 2 dual-core processor for the entry-level tablet Cyote. For the bigger gun Hollywood there’ll be NVIDIA’s super processor, the king of 2011, NVIDIA T30 “KAL-EL”, quad-core and ready to take all prisoners. Five hundred percent performance increase? Sure, why not? Have a bit more information on that if you please back in our original post back from Mobile World Congress 2011. Just today there was a bit of an update on such a situation – confirmation for 2011 via NVIDIA themselves.
And what of previous rumors? Last we heard of an Amazon Android tablet it was a “Family of Devices” – sound like the same idea? Will these Amazon tablets have anything on Samsung’s Galaxy Tab family? Sort of hard to believe given the awesome feedback on the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1, what a whopper!

Quick Look at Today’s Free Amazon App: Monkey Preschool Lunchbox

Here’s an educational game for kids ages 2-5 years of age as the Amazon App Store will tell you. I downloaded the game this morning and played it for a good while, getting a feel for it and its difficulty. Good news, I aced it! I jumped right in and picked the lemon because it started with the letter ‘L’. I then came to the color puzzle, I pick green correctly. I was proud of myself. Then I continued on to the next puzzle, which if I wasn’t the genius that my mother tells me I am, this may have been difficult, ‘put the fruit back together’. Yea, it was a breeze. Next was ”match the fruit’. This takes a few seconds longer than the others, as you have 8 tiles and more than likely you won’t pick the matching two tiles every time.

All in all this is a fun game for the young ones to play. With its very hyperactive monkey host, that does back-flips every time you pass a level, full bright colors, and quick attention grabbing puzzles, this is bound to be a hit with the toddler(s) in the backseat on those long car rides. Just be weary of the sounds of this game, although they will help keep your little one occupied, you as the parent may soon grow very tired of the constant chatter of the monkey doing the play-by-play. So I’d suggest a set of headphones when in close quarters with the game, or public places so as not to annoy those around you.
Your kids will love this game. I found it enjoyable myself, and will be bringing it home to the family for a go at it. You can get Monkey Preschool Lunchbox in the Amazon App Store for free all day today. Once today ends the price goes back up to $1.99, so check it out now!

Super Why! kid’s app hits Android as Amazon Appstore exclusive

If you have kids, I bet your Android device has more than a few apps on it just for your kids to play. I know when my kids were younger they watched a lot of PBS Kids cartoons. One of the ones that my daughter liked was Super Why. Parents that are looking for a new app that kids will have fun playing that is also educational will want to give the new PBS Kids Super Why app a look. The app is an Amazon Appstore for Android exclusive.

The app sells for $2.99 and can be downloaded right now. The app is designed to help kids learn to read with strong early literacy skills as the focus. The app offers the player the ability to play as each of the four main characters including Alpha Pig, Princess Presto, Wonder Red, and, Super Why. The little games in the app allows kids to practice the alphabet, rhyming, spelling, writing, and reading. This app is the tenth best seller in the games section of the Appstore right now.
The game rewards kids with digital stickers for each game they complete and the kids can put those stickers on several different digital pages to make their own virtual sticker book. The app helps the kids learn from mistakes as well so they are playing and learning at the same time. The game will work on Android 2.2 and up smartphones and is 17.7MB.

Amazon cooking “family of devices” not just one Android tablet?

Amazon is tipped to have a “family of devices” using the Android OS in the pipeline for a holiday 2011 release, according to the latest leaks, potentially spanning not only various sizes of tablets but smartphones and/or set-top boxes (STB). According to Android and Me‘s sources, Amazon has been working closely with Google on the new range, potentially using Android Ice Cream Sandwich with a heavily customized interface developed by a specialist in embedded systems.

Exact hardware specifications are unclear at this stage, including form-factors, processors and screen sizes/types. Amazon has been tipped to be looking at Pixel Qi and color E Ink panels, though CEO Jeff Bezos has recently said that he believes color E Ink to be “not ready for prime time.” Instead, he thinks “it makes a lot of sense for there to be a low-power, reflective color display. I think that’s something you could build a fantastic product around.” That could suggest Qualcomm’s mirasol; the company recently showed a prototype ereader/tablet with a front-illuminated mirasol display, promising it would show up in hardware from fall 2011.
WiFi and 3G options as with Kindle seem likely, along with competitive prices as Amazon pushes its “family” against other tablets and STBs it ranges. Bezos recently told press to “stay tuned” for more information on the infamous tablet plans.

Quick Look at Today’s Amazon Free App: Chalk Ball

Today’s free Amazon app is called Chalk Ball, normally priced at $1.99.  Chalk Ball is a reincarnation of the classic “draw a line to bounce the ball where you want it to go” style game, but with a chalkboard art design.  Your goal is to draw chalk lines off which your ball will bounce, to ultimately either bounce into a gold star, or just to keep it in the air as long as possible.  Every time you draw a line, it depletes your chalk reserve, but hitting other chalk balls floating around will replenish it, and there are little chalk spirals that will completely refill it.  The concept, art design, and level of polish make this app an absolute gem.
The game features two different modes: Survival, and Adventure. While these are likely self-explanatory, survival mode is simply a challenge to see how long you can keep your Chalk Ball (who really needs a name, but as far as I can tell, doesn’t have one) in the air. You get points for every chalk target you hit, as well as replenishing your chalk, but it’s definitely a challenge to manage your chalk supply while guiding your Chalk Ball to the various targets and still keeping it in the air.
Adventure mode will take you through a series of stages where screens may scroll and targets will float by, all of which you must maneuver to reach your gold star at the end of the stage. While it’s definitely a challenge just to keep your ball in the air, it’s even moreso when all your obstacles are moving.
As you progress, the game throws new concepts at you — like targets resembling zeros that will deplete half of your chalk if you hit them, or a “ground” across the bottom that will protect you from one fall. By introducing new aspects and having a very simple, approachable concept and an undeniable, adorable charm while you’re playing it, Chalk Ball is quite likely to hook you and keep you coming back for more. I know it has gotten ahold of me, and frankly, I don’t want it to let go. Grab it before the end of the day via the Amazon App Store, and thank me later.
