XOOM 2, Targa, and MORE leaked by Motorola

Let’s have a look at what we’ve got right here. The folks at Motorola have, very recently, uploaded a brand new version of their homepage collection, and in a move that can only be described as nothing less than the classic “FFFFFFFUUUUUUUUUUUU”, they’ve released images of several devices that’ll certainly be released inside 2011 (right, that’s how this works, right?) This collection includes the Motorola XOOM 2, Slimline, Zaha, Targa, and a Dick Tracy watch by the name of Tracy XL.

As yours truly is an oddity lover, I’m glad to see they’ve started at the top of this page with the really weird watch by the name of Tracy XL. With any luck, this device will be Android powered, standalone, and will have a front-facing 8+ megapixel camera with 1080p capture. Sound good? Good.

It’s important to mention here that there really aren’t any hard details in any of these devices, only whispers as to what they might be and/or contain. Next is the Slimline, a gunmetal silver device that has a sort of single-eye thing going on, while the thinnest point will certainly be smaller than a flick of paper, that meaning it’ll be more dangerous than a sword blade. Of course!

Next down the line and 3 out of 5 is the Zaha with the tagline “The Future is Now.” This of course means that the device will be the best thing since sliced Android. It definitely does look rather snazzy, reminding this reporter of the slickness only found thus far in everyones favorite Nexus S device. Below this there are no other perfect central looks at devices because PocketNow.com didn’t snap them up fast enough we must assume, but you can see a tiny corner of the Targa, and the XOOM 2 is at the bottom of every one of the shots and can be seen as a much more sculpturally lovely device than its predecessor. Finally there’s a device called “Pearl,” the details of which, as you’re sure I’m sure, are anyone’s guess.

Final Droid X Gingerbread Build Available for the Impatient

Well we knew that the official Gingerbread update is starting to be rolled out to a small number of lucky Droid X owners, but now the update has been made available for those of you who don’t like to wait. Naturally you’ll have to be rooted with a recovery from which you can flash the upgrade, so if you’re not you’ll have wait for Verizon to push the update OTA.

The update is the official Verizon and Motorola approved Android 2.3 upgrade for the original Droid X. The upgrade, as previous leaks have indicated, brings Droid X owners a revamped version of Motoblur, skinned over the 2.3.3 version of Gingerbread (as opposed to 2.3.4 which is currently only on the Nexus phones).
To flash this, as I mentioned before, you’ll need to be rooted and have ClockworkMod’s Droid X Recovery Bootstrap, so if you’ve been waiting for the official update because you weren’t rooted this isn’t for you. If you are rooted, and were just waiting for the official release, head over here and give it a go.

Motorola Droid X Gingerbread is rolling out in a “soak test”

Earlier this week we mentioned that the Droid X would be starting the Android Gingerbread 2.3 update Friday the 27th. It looks as if this time the date given has actually came true, sort of. According to sources the OTA update for 2.3.3 Gingerbread is rolling out in what Verizon is calling a “soak test” or a test run to put it plainly. It looks as if a few users are starting to see the updates on their devices.

From what we are seeing the update rolling out is in fact Android 2.3.3 and not 2.3.4. It is the same version as earlier leaks but obviously a higher build number and should run plenty stable, but that is what the “soak test” is for. Hopefully no issues are found that will stop the update and it will go out to everyone.

We are not sure how fast Verizon is planning to roll this update out, past updates usually hit most devices within a week but this may be different if they are only pushing it to a select few first. We will follow the update and report back if anything should arise. Start checking for updates on that Droid X of yours and you might be a lucky one and get it tonight. Oh and don’t worry the leak above as well as this new version has already been rooted so fear not, hit that update button!

New DROID Bionic Running Gingerbread Gets Benchmarked, Dual-core OMAP Replaces Tegra 2?

We had to leave that big fat question mark at the end of the post title because there is something that just looks a little fishy about this new Nenamark benchmark that popped up in the last day or so with the name DROID Bionic attached to it.  Before we get into that though, let’s talk about what new goodness we’re seeing above.
First off, the PowerVR SGX 540 GPU stands out.  Why, you ask?  Well, because this GPU matches up to the new TI OMAP 4430 and 4440 dual-core processors that we’re pretty sure Motorola will be showing some favoritism to in the near future (in the DROID3).  This also means that the Tegra 2 by NVIDIA has been given the ax, which shouldn’t come as a huge surprise since most of the rumors surrounding the original delay of this device pointed at the T2 and 4G LTE not playing well together.  Maybe this new OMAP was able to show some LTE love?
The second thing we noticed is the “Android 2.3.3.” mention.  FINALLY, a phone in testing that’s not running Froyo.  The Bionic is slated to come out this summer, so it only makes sense that it would be running Gingerbread, but again, it’s just nice to finally see it.
The third thing is the screen resolution of 960×540.  qHD screen, anyone?  This could be both a positive and a negative which you can read up on over at this DROIDX2 post.
And now to the confusing part.  The Nenamark score of 24.0 flat is extremely odd.  If this benchmark actually happened, there would be a high, low and average – not just a single number.  It’s almost like the benchmark started, someone cancelled it, and Nenamark decided that was good enough to report.  Plus, the DROID3 pumped out a 45.20 on average just a couple of weeks ago, so there is no way the Bionic would put out anything less.
So we’ll take this as the Bionic finally going through testing, but we aren’t going to look at that number and criticize the hell out of it.  It’s either just getting prepared for testing and can’t perform or the benchmark was somehow cut off and then reported on.  Seeing OMAP is pretty interesting though, and something we’ll be paying close attention to over the next couple of months.  No more happy marriage between NVIDIA and Moto?  That sure was quick.

DROIDX Gingerbread Update Soak Test Available (Updated)

Our inbox blew up about an hour ago with readers who were able to “pull” the Gingerbread (Android 2.3) update for the DROIDX.  It’s tough to tell if all of these folks were “soak test” members or not, but we’ve known in the past that if the update goes live on Moto’s servers, that almost any can pull it.  So if you are running stock 2.2 and want to upgrade, now would be the time to check Settings>About>System Updates.
Oh, we should point out that our buddy @p3droid mentioned that you are able to SBF back to 2.3.340 afterwards in case this thing never gets rooted.
Update:  P3 is already preparing a .596 update for rooted users running the leaked .595.  Stay tuned, folks!

Droid X(2) Essentials Bundle over 80% Off Retail [Update: Glitch in Cart System]

Verizon must be feeling generous. In celebration of the Droid X2′s launch they’re giving you a monster deal on accessories that will work with either the original Droid X or Droid X2. The bundle is, as the website points out, worth $145 if purchased separately, but for this week they’re selling it for only $19.97. The package includes several handy accessories and is an awesome deal for anyone who’s been eyeing any of the included goodies.

UPDATE: While I had heard there had been potential issues, this didn’t occur for me since I’m not a Verizon customer, but if you’re already signed in the bundle will show up as $49.97. To get the $19.97 price you need to sign out, search for “essentials bundle” and add it to your cart before signing in. Drop a comment if there are still issues.
The included accessories are a wall charger, vehicle charger, HDMI cable, Multimedia dock and vehicle dock. Both the wall charger and HDMI cable are technically there to be used with the multimedia dock, allowing you to set up a station to charge your phone, and stream HD pictures, movies, or music over the HDMI port, but both have plenty of other value. The wall charger is a handy backup in case you should lose your original or want to keep one at home and have another for on the go. The HDMI cord is a nice bonus, especially since neither iteration of the Droid X comes pre-packaged with one.
The vehicle dock and charger can be handy for keeping your phone alive over long drives, but most importantly makes your phone a full-blown GPS replacement. Naturally the value of this combo depends on your situation, but for most people who have to drive to work each day, this could be a godsend.
Once again, the deal is good only for this week, so if you’ve been thinking about getting any of these accessories for your Droid X, now’s the time to do it. You can get the deal here at Verizon’s online store.

DROID X, DROID Pro, DROID2 and Global Gingerbread Update Imminent Says Motorola

Oh you Motorola employees, what you wont say these days. A cool employee over at the Motorola Mobility forums let slip (or was allowed to slip) the fact that an update to Gingerbread was coming soon on essentially ever Droid ever: DROID X, DROID Pro, DROID2 and Global, and that this update will improve Exchange Activesync functionality. This is fabulous news for all Droid folks for more than one reason, obviously, but the Activesync issue being fixed is like some frosting on an already delicious cookie.

This update specifically on the DROID X will be coming by the end of the second quarter if the words in the sources below are correct – we sort of guessed at this yesterday when news came of a “Soak” came for the system in an update that was thusly unnamed. This comes right on top of the release of the DROID X2 which we’ve just reviewed in full. Have a look at that and see what you’ll be seeing!
Next the DROID Pro and DROID2 will be receiving the update “before the end of the third quarter” which means probably before the end of the. Along with this comes news that ALL of the Gingerbread builds are completed but that Verizon has to approve them before they’re allowed to go out the gate. Lets get those fingers snapping, let’s go!

New Droid 3 Specs Confirm 5-Row QWERTY, 4-inch qHD Display

Additional details for the Motorola Droid 3 have surfaced online, indicating a nice all-around bump is in store for Verizon's iconic handset.  The touch screen has been rumored to be a 4-inch qHD  display, bigger and higher resolution than its predecessors.  This has been confirmed by a TechnoBuffalo source who also adds that Motorola has indeed managed to squeeze a fifth row into the keyboard, providing a dedicated number row.
Additional details for the Droid 3 include an 8-megapixel camera on the back with a front-facing camera for video chat. Resolution is unknown at this time, but we're hoping for something around 2.0-megapixels.  One notably absent feature is the lack of 4G LTE support, something which Verizon is really pushing as of late. Maybe that's something more appropriate for a Droid 4. Droid 4G. See what we did there?
The processor is expected to be a dual-core platform, however the exact brand and type is not yet known. Some are hearing NVIDIA Tegra 2, but it's entirely possible that Motorola could stick with their friends at Texas Instruments, using the OMAP chipset.
TechnoBuffalo is hearing Verizon has the Droid 3 lined up with a release some time in June and we see no reason to argue here. This would put a few weeks space between the Droid Charge, Xperia PLAY and Droid X2, and give customers some breathing room after a string of excellent offerings.

Motorola Droid X Gingerbread Update Hinted via Project Invite

It’s good to know that even though the DROID X2 is being sent out now, that the original Droid X wont be abandoned. By no means! A message has been sent out to developers and users of this cool classic Droid at Motorola’s Mobility forums asking owners of the unit to participate in a project of little detail. This project requires you to go through an enrollment survey and sign a non-disclosure paper so that you don’t spill the beans to the world before they do. What could it possible be? Perhaps they’ll update their software to X2 proportions?

Some More On The Droid 3

Nevermind that the Droid X2 won’t even be out til the end of the week, the rumors about the Droid 3 are heating up big time.  Although there have been numerous photo leaks of the incoming Droid 3 there hasn’t been much more coverage on the follow up to the original Droid, and the Droid 2.
More after the break

Technobuffalo.com is reporting the following specs from a tipster that is often correct when leaking to Technobuffalo.com:
-4 inch qHD screen
- dual core (most likely OMAP 4, Texas Instruments Processor at 1ghz)
- 5 row slide out keyboard
- 8mp rear facing camera
- Front facing camera
- HDMI out

What the device is lacking is support for 4G/LTE.  Verizon Wireless came out with two guns a blazing when they lit up the new 4G/LTE network. There is no doubt about it that 4G/LTE is extremely fast however the Droid 3 (like the Droid X2) won’t support 4G/LTE.

New Details on Droid 3 Confirmed

With all the sequels coming out, one couldn’t be blamed for confusing a list of phones coming out this summer with a list of summer blockbusters. This particular upgrade happens to be the Motorola Droid 3 for Verizon. More exciting an upgrade from the Droid 2, then the 2 was from the original Droid. The third iteration is shaping up to bring the original Droid line back into the forefront of Android superphones when it is released this June.

A tipster has been able to confirm a few of the rumors that have been swirling about this phone as well as that the launch date will fall in June. First of all, as can be seen in the images of this phone that have been leaked, a full extra row is being added to the keyboard, to act as a dedicated number row. The biggest confirmation was that the screen will indeed be a qHD 4″ screen, presumably the same as the screen on the Motorola Atrix 4G, and while the phone is confirmed to have one of those new-fangled dual core processors, we still don’t know if it’s Tegra, or Texas Instrument’s latest OMAP processor (The original 2 Droids were both powered by single core TI OMAP processors).
One upping it’s X2 cousin, this numbered Droid will be the first Motorola Droid phone to feature a front-facing camera. The phone will unfortunately be LTE-less though. While hardly a surprise given the issues we’ve been hearing about regarding the Droid Bionic, what was supposed to be Motorola’s first LTE phone, it’s a little disappointing when nearly everything that moves is having 4G slapped on the end of its name. Ignoring that phones don’t move, we continue on…
While the lack of 4G is disappointing, the Droid 3 should be a great option for Verizon users who want extra power this summer, and it will be THE phone for Verizon users who need that physical keyboard.

Droid X2 Hands-On and Unboxing [video]

The war is on! It’s time for the qHD battle to begin, and it’s begun this morning with no less than a HTC Sensation taking on the DROID X2, and wouldn’t you know it, we’ve got both. Let me introduce you to the newest member of the DROID side – DROID X2! This is a Motorola device that appears at first to be ever so slightly different from the DROID X it replaces – will it be too much for those who love new specs to bear? And what about other phone comparisons? Would you like a couple of pics of the DROID X2 next to the G2x? Sure!

The dimensions on this mother are exactly the same as the first DROID X at 5.02 x 2.58 x 0.39 inches. Next you’ve got to notice the weight, right? Not especially – they appear to be basically exactly the same there too. What about the display? Oh here we go, a new item! This newest version of the DROID X is a 4.3-inch 960 x 540 qHD display, rather than the 854 x 480 resolution screen in the older version. Of course this new version has a whole extra core as well: NVIDIA’s Tegra 2 dual-core revvs this engine up.

Inside you’ll also find Android 2.2 Froyo, an 8-megapixel camera on the back with the ability to grab 1080p video, Wifi b/g/n and CDMA radio. You’ll be using this device on Verizon’s network, but only on 3G – no LTE for you! Have a peek at a SunSpider Javascript benchmark here for an additional piece of improvement candy (lower is better):

SunSpider Java Benchmark in Stock Browsers

Next, in Quadrant Advanced: Droid X2: total = 2743 (CPU 7241 / IO 2846) / Droid X: total=1353 (CPU 1266 / IO 3044) IO actually dropped on Droid X2!
Finally in SmartBench 2011: Droid X2: 2775/2423 / Droid X: 844/1499 vs. Galaxy S II (powered by Samsung 1.2Ghz dual-core): 3830/2249

Then prepare yourself for the greatest unboxing and hands-on video you’ve probably ever seen in your life, courtesy of the best camera and most stolen tripod in history. Steven Spielberg, you thief!

Unboxing and Hands-On

Then take a peek at this gallery of pics below. Included are several shots from our good friends at SlashGear (you’ll notice the difference by the bright white heaven setup that Vince has going on) comparing the DROID X to the DROID X2.

Amazon Wireless: Get Your DROID X2 for $149.99

You can go to Verizon Wireless online right now and get the fresh new DROID X2 for $199 as was mentioned earlier this morning. That’s a great deal and all, but guess what….You can also go to Amazon Wireless and grab the DROID X2 for $149.99. Now to me that seems like an even better deal. One thing I did noticed when looking into this deal is that unfortunately it looks like the phone is on backorder. So if you’re wanting to get this deal from Amazon Wireless, you’ll possibly have to wait a couple weeks for it to ship. If you guys are like me, you’ll want instant gratification. This may mean paying the extra $50 to get the DROID X2 from Verizon, assuming they have plenty in stock. You probably should look into that prior to choosing from where you’ll order.

Ok so, to to recap on this deal, Amazon Wireless is setting up VZW customers with this new DROID X2 for $149.99 which is a huge discount from the stricken through list price shown at $559.99. If it’s time for an upgrade, or you’re a customer of another carrier looking for a change in service, consider this option. Whatever your decision, you’re getting one of the latest Android devices from Motorola and Verizon.

DROID X2 for Verizon, Available Online NOW!

Yesterday, we told our readers that Big Red would officially have the DROID X2 in store on May 26th for $199 with 2yr contract, and online today for the same deal. Well here’s a screenshot of the proof. Today is May 19th and VZW has held up their end of the bargain. This new device may be only releasing with Android 2.2, but the press release assures us that it’ll see an update to 2.3. Powered by its 1GHz dual-core Tegra 2 processor, 540×960 qHD capacitive touchscreen it definitely beats out its predecessor the Droid X.
So if this is the DROID you’ve been looking for, the wait is over. Head on over to Verizon Wireless and check out the deal today.

Motorola Droid X2 in Costco stores before Verizon [update]

It looks like Costco is getting in on some Droid X2 action also. I am sure you all know plenty about the Droid X, and its bigger brother the X2 coming this week with an improved higher resolution display and blazing fast dual-core CPU to speed things along. We recently posted about it officially heading to Verizon online and stores starting tomorrow and the 26th in store. Costco might beat them to in-store access.

According to the Verizon announcement the Droid X will be available for purchase on Verizon starting tomorrow May 19th, and then in-store on the 26th, but after seeing the photo above Costco has it listed as “launching in kiosks starting as early as May 20th”. I doubt Verizon would let Costco sell them physically in store, before Verizon stores themselves so maybe that is why it mentions “as early as” May 20th, and not actually for sure on Friday.
Either way the Droid X2 will be making it into buyers hands starting early next week, or some lucky buyers online tomorrow might get it Friday if they do overnight shipping. For now we only have the screenshot above to go on, so it is possible they will be “in stores” at Costco starting Friday May 20th but I have a feeling they wont be physically there until the 26th just like at the Verizon stores. Stay tuned as we will update this story once we hear more.
Update: It looks like new information just dropped again, and according to AndroidCentral the Droid X2 has been ready to sell for more than a week now, and most stores probably already have stock. The last information we just received shows an email stating sales “can start” starting Thursday at retail locations. So if your not busy tomorrow, or really want the Droid X2 feel free to check with some Verizon retail stores and hope you get lucky.

Motorola Droid X2 heads to Verizon online tomorrow, stores May 26

Yesterday I mentioned that the user guide for the Droid X2 has landed on the Motorola website and we were looking forward to the smartphone hitting stores. Verizon has now announced that the Droid X2 will be available online starting tomorrow and will be in stores on May 26. The X2 is the first dual-core 1GHz smartphone that will come to the Verizon Wireless network. The smartphone will have all the features we expect of a high-end Android offering.

It will have a 4.3-inch screen with scratch resistant and anti-reflective glass and qHD resolution. The smartphone supports Flash content and the rear camera is an 8MP unit that can record video in HD resolution. The X2 comes with apps for uploading and tagging photos to sites like Flickr and Facebook from a single place. The Droid X2 runs Android 2.2 at launch and will be updated to Android 2.3.
Other features include the ability to shoot consent out to your TV in the living room. The X2 is ready for enterprise use with support for security and IT policies. It will also be used as a mobile hotspot and share the 3G connection with up to five devices. Verizon will offer the Droid X2 for $199.99 with a new 2-year agreement and the purchase of a voice and data plan.

Motorola Xoom Continues to Eat Benchmarks For Breakfast

Not to be outdone by the Samsung Galaxy S II, thanks to the smarty-pants developers over at XDA the Xoom is now burning through benchmarks at 1.6 GHz. As games for Honeycomb continue to get more awesome, and with Google’s new Movies service, you’ll have plenty of content to throw all that speed at. This is all courtesy of the open source Tiamat kernel, which has recently been updated to version 1.4.2.

While the internet can lecture you all day about how benchmarks don’t necessarily equal real-world performance, you gotta admit that Quadrant square is beautiful. You see that puny little bar next to the Xoom one? That was the score to beat only a year ago, and we’re already talking about quad-core processors! We’re gonna need a new graph soon, or an exponential scale… but this engineering student digresses.
Another bonus snuck into this update for Tiamat, enabling USB Ethernet, which would allow you to use your phone as a USB-tethered internet in a box. While overshadowed by the mind-melting benchmarks people are getting this is a cool feature. The only issue being the need for a seperate microUSB to microUSB cable since the Xoom only comes with a a micro to standard cable.
If you are brave enough, or excited enough not to care, head on over and follow the instructions to get your Xoom zooming, and be sure to let us know how it is!

Android Honeycomb 3.1 Review and XOOM Benchmarks

We’ve got our first official hands-on here with the newest mobile operating system to come out of Google’s labs, Android 3.1 Honeycomb. This is a relatively sparse update with only a few little bits for you to be bouncing around with, the most visible of which are involved in widgets, tasks, and USB connections. We’ve also got a special selection of benchmarks added up here for you to compare to our original tests when the Motorola XOOM (aka the first device to get this update) first came to our doorstep.

New Features

This newest tiny update to Google’s tablet-based mobile operating system is one that comes in several parts. Obviously as with any update there are speed improvements and bug fixes that are happening behind closed doors – but what can we see? Let’s have a look in the video below followed by a bit of expansion below:

USB Enhancements

What you’re seeing here is a run-through of the items presented by Google as the high points of this system upgrade. One of the items we’re not able to take a peek at quite yet for lack of the necessary connections is the USB upgrade – in the very near future, using a gaming controller to play all of your first-person shooter and side-scrolling jumper games will not be out of the question. In fact, in addition to being able to use things like Xbox controllers, keyboards, mice, and the like without so much as a driver, you’ll be able to work with devices you might not have ever dreamed of attaching to your tablet. Watch out, iPad.

Widget Enhancements

You’re now given the ability to re-size widgets at will. Not a whole lot of widgets support this as of yet as their developers must still work this functionality into their code, but the few we do see here are pretty neat. We can wait for a full-screen Music app that looks like Music Beta.

Multitasking Improvements

As you’ll only come to notice if you’re the sort of person who opens up 18 apps at once, you’re now able to scroll up and down through your tasks instead of being limited to a few. Between the video where I say “infinite” and now I’ve come to learn that the max amount of apps you can have open and scroll through is 18. After that it’s a total planar collapse. That said, enhancements make it so you’re able to open all of these apps without a problem, without being asked to close another app you can continue opening apps at will, switching to and fro with ease!

Benchmarks

Have a glance at the following benchmarks as performed by yours truly on the XOOM only moments after loading the upgrade to Android 3.1 Honeycomb. If you do care to take a look, we’ve got the same stuff up in the original review for you to compare with. Is the change all that big? Not especially – unless you consider going downward an improvement where a higher number is actually better.

This update claims to be a performance enhancer but in reality, it appears to fix up a few things that mean a whole lot more to those everyday users like you and I.

Wrap-Up

All in all this update is certainly pretty in a couple of places, and we can’t wait to start working with controllers and other peripherals like never before, but it’s no new tasty treat. It’s not an upgrade that’s going to vastly improve your processor speed, you’re not going to blast off into outer space with it. What you will do is get to scroll through your tasks, resize your widgets, and see the shiny new 3.1 in your system information. Fun for all!

Motorola Droid X2 lands on Motorola and Verizon sites, specs confirmed

Last week we talked a bit about the Motorola Droid X2 when we learned that the smartphone was set to land on May 26. That day will be here before we know it and today the specs of the X2 have again been confirmed via support pages for the X2 on the Motorola website. I guess at this point the smartphone is not exactly a big secret any longer, especially with Motorola offering the full user guide in PDF form. This is your chance to learn all about the smartphone ahead of its expected launch next week.

Other than the PDF user guide on the Motorola website, the Droid X2 has been spied along side some accessories on Verizon’s site as well. The specs of the smartphone will include a big 4.3-inch display, and it will have a 1GHz dual core processor as well. That big screen is the qHD resolution offering we expected. The smartphone also has a micro USB port on the side along with a HDMI port and a 3.5mm headphone jack. The smartphone has WiFi and Bluetooth naturally along with GPS.
It’s nice to see the Droid X2 getting ready for the big time. One of the only things left to learn at this point is what the phone will cost. Other specs that have surfaced since the phone was unveiled include an 8MP rear camera with 720p video recording, 8GB microSD card for storage, and Android 2.3 for the operating system. The price is not known at this time, but I would think it would be the typical $199.99 or very close.
